What is LED?
Though it’s been around since 1962, LED Lighting has recently taken off in popularity. Today, these tiny lights illuminate low power laptop screens, new, energy efficient Christmas lights, and scrolling displays on buses.
You’ve probably seen LED traffic lights, for instance. Their red, yellow, and green “lights” are actually made from groups of small bulbs that illuminate together, resulting in a brighter, more visible traffic light and tremendous energy savings for cities.
Traditional, incandescent lights operate by heating a filament. This process generates unnecessary heat, consumes tremendous energy, and destroys the filaments in a small amount of time. By contrast, LED lights are based on diodes, which is a simple form of an electrical semiconductor. Put simply, these diodes create light by releasing photons in atoms.
Diode-based lighting has several advantages:
- LED lights last much longer than other forms of lighting
- They use much less power to create illumination
- They’re compact, so they can fit in wrist-watches and even onto flexible surfaces
- They last much longer than incandescent bulbs.
- They produce different spectrums of lighting, making them great both for visible light applications (e.g. flashlights) and invisible light
applications (e.g. electronics remote controls)
